The Accountability Court on Monday recorded the statement of female prosecution witness in assets reference case against former president Asif Ali Zardari and summoned two more witnesses of the case during the next hearing. The accountability court judge Khalid Mehmood Ranjha heard the case.

During the course of hearing, the statement of the prosecution witness Madina Munawara was recorded and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) legal consultant completed cross examination over it. The court adjourned the hearing of the case till January 14 and summoned two more witnesses of the case including Dr Najma and Rizwan Ahmad during the next hearing.

Munwara Bibi while recording her statement before the court confirmed her signature on 400 documents regarding assets' details of the former president which were brought from Switzerland. Following the request of NAB, the court also summoned two witnesses who translated the documents related to former president assets from French to English.

Farooq H Niak counsel for former president Asif Ali Zardari appeared before the court. Niak and other counsel for former president raised the objection that the 400 documents over which Munawara confirmed her signature are photocopy while according to Qanun-e-Shahadat genuine documents are mandatory for evidence.

NAB prosecutor Khalid Ishaq told the court that according to settled law all the documents should be produced in a memo as it has value of verified documents. The assets reference was initiated against Zardari and Benazir in 2001 during the tenure of former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf (Retd) but its hearing was adjourned indefinitely in 2010. In 2002, Zardari had challenged the assets reference, which pertains to the former president's movable and immovable property in Pakistan and abroad. In the assets reference, the prosecution alleged that Zardari had purchased a number of properties in the name of his front man and had deposited the money from kickbacks in different Swiss banks.
